Taxi drivers know that flexibility is part of the job. You might be starting out to see if the trade suits you, or perhaps you’re a seasoned pro picking up extra shifts during the busy Christmas or summer holiday period. Either way, an annual policy isn’t always the best fit.

Temporary taxi insurance is a flexible, no-faff way to get the cover you need without being tied to a 12-month contract.

  • Cover durations available for 7, 14, 21, or 28 days
  • Comprehensive cover
  • Valid for both private and public hire
  • Ages 30 to 74 covered for durations under 28 days
  • Ages 23 to 75 covered for 28-day policies
  • Carriage of passengers, parcels, and food included (Hire and Reward)

  • No black box or cameras required
  • Get a quote and be on your way in under two minutes

How Much Does Temporary Taxi Insurance Cost?

We know that every penny counts when you’re running a business. With Department for Transport (DfT) statistics showing that there are over 313,000 licensed taxi and private hire vehicles in England alone, it’s clear that more drivers than ever are keeping our communities moving.

The cost of taxi driver insurance depends on several factors, including your age, your location, and your car’s insurance group.

Professional taxi drivers often face much higher car insurance costs due to the increased time spent on the road, with annual taxi premiums often running into the thousands of pounds, depending on your risk profile. Newly licensed drivers or those operating in busy city centres tend to sit at the higher end of that scale.

Choosing a pay-as-you-go taxi insurance model for the time you actually work can be a much more cost-effective solution for part-time or seasonal drivers. It means you aren’t paying for a policy that sits idle when you’re not using your car for work. For an exact price, get a quote.

Why Choose Pay-As-You-Go Taxi Insurance?

Sometimes life doesn’t fit into a 12-month window. Short-term taxi insurance is designed for the real-world scenarios that drivers face every day:

  • Testing the Waters: Licensing is handled by your local council, and each region has its own specific requirements for a private hire or hackney carriage licence. If you’ve just completed your local knowledge test or medical and want to see if the lifestyle fits, taking out a few weeks of cover is a great way to start without a huge upfront investment.
  • Seasonal Peaks: The holiday seasons often see a surge in demand. Many drivers use temporary taxi insurance to work specifically during these high-earning windows.
  • Courier Flexibility: Our policies aren’t just for passengers. If you want to switch to food or parcel delivery during quieter periods, this cover also doubles as courier insurance, so you’re fully covered to do so.
  • Part-Time Flexibility: If you only drive a few weekends a month or during specific events like festivals, paying for cover only when you need it just makes sense.

We’ve made our taxi car insurance simple so you can stay road-legal and focused on your fares. You can get a quote for some of the best taxi insurance rates in under two minutes, right here or through our app.

What You Need To Know About Short-Term Taxi Cover

Our temporary taxi insurance is built for modern drivers who need high-quality protection without the traditional black box or camera requirements. We work with a panel of A-rated experienced taxi insurers to provide reliable cover for licensed drivers.

Before you get behind the wheel, there are a few important rules to make sure you’re eligible for our temporary taxi cover. We want to keep things straightforward, so here’s exactly what you need to know:

  • Licence and experience: You must have held a full UK driving licence for at least 2 years.
  • Driver age and duration: If you’re looking for cover under 28 days (7, 14, or 21 days), you’ll need to be aged 30 to 74. If you need a full 28-day policy, we can cover drivers aged 23 to 75.
  • Your badge and plates: You must hold a valid taxi badge. Your vehicle must also be plated with the same local authority that issued your badge. We cover the majority of councils in England, Wales, and Scotland, though we currently exclude PCO (London) regions.
  • Vehicle ownership: You must either own the vehicle you’re insuring outright or have an official leasing agreement in your own name.
  • Vehicle details: Your taxi can have a maximum vehicle value of £50,000 and up to 8 seats (including the driver’s seat).
  • Driving history: We can accept drivers with up to 2 claims and up to 9 penalty points within the last 3 years.
  • What you’re covered to do: We offer comprehensive cover that’s valid for both private and public hire. This includes the carriage of passengers, parcels, packages, and food for hire and reward, meaning you can easily switch to deliveries during your shift.

Temporary Taxi Insurance FAQs

Can I get one-day taxi insurance?

Whilst you can get temporary car insurance for a day, specialist taxi insurance starts from one week (7 days). We offer durations of 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. This allows for the specific licensing requirements from local authorities while still offering massive flexibility compared to a standard annual policy.

Does this cover private hire and public hire?

Yes. Whether you’re a private hire driver or a hackney carriage driver who can be hailed on the street, we can help. Our policies cover vehicles with up to 7 passengers (8 seats total, including the driver).

Can I use the vehicle for deliveries?

Yes, you can. In addition to carrying passengers, our policy allows you to use your vehicle for food and parcel delivery.

Will this protect my No Claims Discount?

Absolutely. Because our temporary policies are separate from any annual cover you might have, a claim on your short-term policy shouldn’t impact the No Claims Bonus on your main car insurance. It’s one of the best ways to keep your long-term premiums low while staying protected on the job.

How quickly does my cover start?

As soon as your payment is confirmed, your insurance is active from the time you specified. We’ll send your documents straight to your inbox and they’ll be accessible in the GoShorty app immediately. No waiting around – just quick, clear, and confident cover.
