What is learner driver insurance?

Learner driver car insurance is a specialised policy created just for learner drivers. You’d probably worked out that much from the name alone though. A learner driver insurance policy helps learners get behind the wheel at a key moment in their driving journey.

Use a learner driver car insurance policy to practice, practice, practice or simply to take your test in a car you’re familiar with. Many choose to use learner driver insurance to either practice away from their lessons or simply learn to drive in their parent’s car. You can even use it to take your driving test in your own car.

We offer temporary learner driver car insurance so you aren’t tied into a long term insurance policy when you’re just a learner. Drive your friend or family member’s car with fully comprehensive car insurance. Don’t put their no claims discount at risk.

Flexible Learner Driver Insurance gives you the best chance to pass

Practice is important when you’re learning any new skill. With driving a car it’s even more essential. It’s said the average person needs 45 hours of lessons and an additional 22 hours of practice.

Short term learner driver insurance can cover you to drive a friend’s car, family member’s car or even someone else’s car. This gives you the chance to rack up those practice hours away from your driving instructor in your own time. You just need to make sure you have an accompanying driver.

Insurance for learner drivers gives you the chance to improve your driving before your test. Our flexible cover lets you insure a learner for as little as 1 hour or up to 24 weeks.

Can I get Learner Driver Insurance – Am I Eligible?

Yes! We’re happy to tell you that learner driver insurance is available.

You just need to be a provisional licence holder and meet a few other criteria. Learner driver insurance has a few more caveats you need to consider as well. The named driver must always be accompanied by someone over 25 who owns a full UK driving licence that they’ve held for at least 3 years.

Your learner driver insurance policy expires when you pass your test. But, it is valid for 3 hours so you can drive home if you need to.

Learner Driver Insurance FAQs

What does learner driver insurance cover?

Any temporary car insurance policy you obtain through GoShorty will be fully comprehensive. Our provisional insurance is no different. This means your learner insurance policy protects you from:

How does learner driver insurance work?

It works in the same way as a traditional car insurance policy. Provisional licence holders will be insured to drive the nominated car and the policy will sit alongside the car owner’s own car insurance policy. With GoShorty you can get a quote in minutes and have the policy in your inbox in seconds so you can start practicing.

Do I need a supervisor, who can they be and how old must they be?

Yes you do. As a learner driver you can only drive with someone in the same car. This person must have a full uk driving licence, have been driving for at least 3 years and be aged 25 tears or older. They do not have to be related to you.

Can I learn to drive in someone else’s car?

It is possible to learn to drive in someone else’s car. You need to be insured. You also need a provisional license, a driver with a license to supervise you and the appropriate plates for your country. These are L in England & Scotland, with the option of D in Wales.

Can you get temporary car insurance for 17 year olds?

We offer temporary car insurance for drivers aged 18 to 75. For younger drivers, we offer learner insurance from 17 to 25.

Does learner driver insurance cover you after you’ve passed your driving test?

No it doesn’t. Once you’ve passed your practical driving test your learner driver insurance will no longer be valid. You have a grace period of 3 hours to drive home from the test centre, but once this period is over you must take out car insurance.

Can I put a learner driver on my insurance?

While many car insurance policies will allow you to add another driver, or even a learner driver, it may not be the best idea. If you simply add a learner driver to your insurance policy, any accidents or incidents could affect the owner’s no claims discount.
With a provisional insurance policy, this won’t be the case. As short term learner insurance is so flexible it can end up being much cheaper than adding them to your existing policy.

How much does learner insurance cost?

The total cost of learner insurance will vary depending on:

  1. Your age
  2. The vehicle you want to cover
  3. The length of the policy

Does learner driver insurance cover me for my driving test?

Yes it does. If you want to take the practical driving test in your own car then you can use learner driver insurance to do this. If you are taking it in your driving instructor’s car then you won’t need to worry about sorting your own insurance for the test.
