Download the app: Earn Points & Get Temporary Insurance Fast
If you work in courier services, deliver takeaways, or are thinking about dipping your toes into the gig economy, you’ll need a policy that keeps you legally protected. Rather than a standard van insurance policy, you’ll need one that specifically covers the carriage of goods for hire and reward.
That’s why we offer hire and reward insurance for vans. If you use a car for your shifts, you’ll need our dedicated car courier insurance instead.
According to research from Ofcom, UK parcel volumes hit a record-breaking 4.2 billion items over the last year, proving that delivery work is busier than ever. But committing to a full year of commercial cover can be incredibly expensive. Annual courier policies routinely cost upwards of £2,000 on average, and even more for younger drivers.
Our pay-as-you-go hire and reward insurance is the perfect alternative for van drivers. It gives you a highly flexible, fast cover option that lets you get a quote and hit the road in no time.
What we offer:
With our straightforward application process, you can grab a quick quote and head out whenever a delivery job comes in. There’s no need to tie yourself down to an expensive and rigid annual policy.
Hire and reward insurance – also known as courier or delivery insurance – is a specific class of commercial cover designed for anyone paid to deliver goods. It’s a legal necessity for delivery drivers and couriers to protect themselves and other road users while carrying cargo. Whether you’re dropping off weekly grocery shops, retail parcels, or hot pizzas, this cover ensures you remain legally protected on every single run.
If you’re a tradesperson carrying your own tools, you actually need temporary carriage of own goods insurance instead. But if you are transporting items that belong to other people in exchange for payment, hire and reward is the only way to go. If you’re not sure which category your work falls into, take a look at our guide on what van insurance do I need to make sure you get the right cover first time.
Whether you’re picking up a weekend shift, covering a busy seasonal rush, or taking on delivery work as a regular hustle, our temporary delivery van insurance is built to fit around your schedule. If you want to make sure you’re fully prepared before taking on your first shift, reading our guide on the best way to get insured for delivery work is a great place to start.
Our flexible policies allow you to take on a wide range of paid van delivery jobs, including:
Getting set up only takes a couple of minutes. When filling out our quick online quote form, simply select temporary insurance for business use as your reason for cover. Then, under the vehicle usage section, select SDP + carriage of goods for hire & reward (Social, Domestic, and Pleasure plus carriage of goods for hire and reward).
That’s all there is to it – you’ll be fully covered to make your drops with absolute peace of mind and comprehensive protection.
Just like any standard vehicle policy, the cost of hire and reward insurance depends on a few personal details. Insurers will look at things like your van’s make and model, your age, where you live, and your past driving history.
Because full-time courier work carries higher risks, annual commercial policies can be a massive financial burden. That’s why our short-term cover is such a sensible option. It lets you buy only the hours, days, or weeks you actually need, keeping your overheads low and your profits in your pocket. You can get an exact price for your shift in under two minutes by starting a quick online quote.
Once you complete our quick online quote, you’ll be shown options and prices from our insurance panel. Once you choose and pay, your comprehensive cover can start immediately. This legally covers you to carry out commercial delivery work, protecting both your van and other road users while you make your drops.
The biggest perk of our temporary cover is that you are entirely in control of the duration. If you’ve got a busy weekend shift lined up, you can take out a quick 48-hour policy. If you’re doing seasonal work over the summer or Christmas rushes, you can set up a weekly or monthly policy.
To get started, make sure you choose ‘SDP + carriage of goods for hire & reward’ under the Vehicle Usage section of your application. This makes sure you are legally covered for commercial deliveries rather than just personal driving.

Our pay-as-you-go hire and reward insurance is designed to let you safely deliver parcels, packages, or hot takeaways in your van for payment.
With our comprehensive cover, you get:
Please note: This policy covers your van and your legal liability on the road, but it does not cover the physical value of the food or parcels you are carrying. If you are carrying high-value parcels, you may also want to look into separate Goods in Transit (GIT) insurance.
Our short-term cover works around your schedule. Whether you need a quick fix for a single afternoon or ongoing cover for a few weeks, we’ve got you covered.

MID/Navigate: We update Navigate four times a day, 365 days a year, meaning your temporary cover is registered rapidly. But don’t worry, as soon as you pay for your policy, we email your certificate of cover instantly. This is legally binding, instant proof of your insurance, meaning you can head straight out on your shift with total peace of mind.
The Van:
The Driver:
Hire and reward (often shortened to H&R) is a specific category of commercial motor insurance. It is legally required if you are paid to transport other people’s goods, parcels, or hot food. Standard social, domestic, and pleasure (SDP) policies will not cover this type of work.
It allows you to use your van to make commercial deliveries, such as courier drops, parcel deliveries, or takeaway runs. Please note that while our policy covers your vehicle and your legal liability on the road, it does not cover the physical goods themselves.
No, standard temporary van insurance (even if it includes business use for carrying your own tools) does not cover deliveries. If you are caught delivering food or parcels on a standard policy, you are technically driving uninsured. This can result in a £300 fine, 6 penalty points, and police seizure of your van.
No, we now also offer temporary courier car insurance. If you’re delivering parcels or food using a car instead of a van, you can just as easily get covered.
Not at all. With us, you can get a competitive quote online in under two minutes. Once you pay, your cover can start immediately, and your certificate of insurance is emailed to you instantly so you can get straight to work.
The comprehensive temporary food delivery insurance we provide will cover you working for big-name courier services like Deliveroo or Uber Eats. As an extra bonus, our cover isn’t specifically linked to any businesses, meaning that purchasing one policy will have you covered across all different providers.
Because our policies are temporary, they can sometimes take a little time to appear on Navigate (the new MIB database). However, your instant insurance certificate is legally binding proof of cover. Keep a digital copy on your phone when you are out on a shift so you can easily show it if asked.
We update Navigate four times a day, every single day of the year. This is much more frequent than most insurers, meaning your temporary cover will be registered on the system rapidly. If you are curious about how this database works, you can read our blog on how long does it take for insurance to show on the MID (now Navigate).
