In 2025, we asked 2,000 people to identify famous UK beauty spots from photographs to find out just how recognisable our most iconic locations are. Interestingly, many Brits didn’t realise these stunning places can be found right here at home.

• According to our research, 22% mistook the lavender fields of Snowshill in the Cotswolds for Provence, France.
• Another 28% thought Luskentyre Beach in the Outer Hebrides was in New Zealand, Australia, or the Caribbean.
• Meanwhile, 17% assumed Kynance Cove in Cornwall was somewhere in the Mediterranean.
• A massive 33% thought Ben Nevis was in Iceland.

Despite this confusion, 92% said they’d choose to visit a UK beauty spot over going abroad. What’s more, 85% said they were genuinely surprised at how beautiful these places are, with 64% agreeing that UK holidays can be just as enjoyable as overseas trips.

Our more recent survey shows the popularity of the UK staycation has only been on the rise, with 62% planning a UK holiday this year. Recent travel data supports this, with more of us planning domestic getaways than ever before. According to The Independent, Airbnb searches for UK stays have jumped 15% year-on-year, while domestic holiday bookings are seeing double-digit growth. It isn’t just families heading off, either; adult-only weekend bookings are up by 20%, showing that groups of friends and younger travellers are leading the charge on UK road trips.
