Who Needs Temporary Learner Car Insurance?

Long-term annual policies are often pricey and inflexible, meaning they’re not the best fit for learner drivers. Our short-term policies are great for learners looking to:

Get some more practice before their test.

Borrow a friend or family member’s car.

Take their test in a friend or family member’s car.

Protect the car owner’s no claims discount.

What Are The Different Types of Learner Insurance Policies Available?

We offer temporary learner insurance policies which can be used for a number of reasons. Due to the infrequency of practice sessions learners tend to have, temporary options are one of the best ways to insure learner drivers. Our available learner policies include –

  • Driving test insurance – If you have to take your test in your own car, you must have insurance in place. Our learner policies cover you for that.
  • Learning in Your Parent’s Car – We know most learners won’t be practising in their own car, so our policies provide the ideal cover for learning in your parents’ or friends’ car – their no-claims discount will be protected whilst you practise.
  • Pay as You Go Learner Insurance – the pay-as-you-go element of our temporary options is what makes them so great. If you’re just going to have practice sessions in the week leading up to your test, then you can just choose a week of learner insurance. If you are going to be going out for a couple of hours every week, just opt for an hourly learner policy as and when you need it. Easy!
  • Learner Driver Practice – Our temporary learner insurance is made for providing cover whilst you’re out on practice sessions outside of lessons. Whether you’re learning in a manual or automatic car, our insurance will have you covered so you can get in all the practice sessions you need.

Flexible Learner Driver Insurance Gives You The Best Chance Of Passing

Practice is important when you’re learning any new skill, especially when you’re learning to drive. The time needed to pass your test varies from person to person. But on average it’s found that you need 40 to 45 hours to pass your test, supplemented with 15 to 20 hours of practice with family and friends.

This makes short-term learner driver insurance the perfect choice as you can drive any car while being properly supervised outside of lessons.  This gives you the chance to rack up those practice hours away from your driving instructor in your own time.

Insurance for learner drivers gives you the chance to improve your driving before your test. Our flexible cover lets you insure a learner for as little as 1 day or up to 24 weeks. Save yourself the cost of an annual policy and pay only for the few days of practice you need. Rather than wasting money on long term cover you won’t use, save with one of our flexible, temporary insurance policies.

Do learner drivers need insurance?

Yes, learner drivers need insurance when practising to drive in a friend’s or parent’s car. This ensures you’re fully covered before hitting the road, whether you need an hour’s practice, or want to take some time to fine tune your skills before your test.

Learner drivers do not need to take out cover when using their instructor’s car during a lesson or test.

How does learner driver insurance work?

It works in the same way as a traditional car insurance policy. Provisional licence holders will be insured to drive the nominated car and the policy will sit alongside the car owner’s own car insurance policy. With GoShorty you can get a quote in minutes and have the policy in your inbox in seconds so you can start practicing.

Do I need a supervisor, who can they be and how old must they be?

Yes you do. As a learner driver you can only drive with someone in the same car. This person must have a full uk driving licence, have been driving for at least 3 years and be aged 25 tears or older. They do not have to be related to you.

Can I learn to drive in someone else’s car?

You can learn to drive in another person’s car as long as you have the right type of insurance. It’s important to practise driving as much as possible before your test. So a temporary policy allows you to get that important extra practice in, safely and under suitable supervision. You need a provisional licence, as well as a driver who is suitable to supervise you and the appropriate plates for your country. These are L in England & Scotland, with the option of D in Wales.

Can you get car insurance for 17 year olds?

We offer temporary learner insurance for drivers aged 17-69. As long as you hold a provisional licence and a suitable vehicle to learn in, we can get you on the road in minutes.

Does learner driver insurance cover you after you’ve passed your driving test?

No it doesn’t. Once you’ve passed your practical driving test your learner driver insurance will no longer be valid. You have a grace period of 3 hours to drive home from the test centre, but once this period is over you must take out another policy like our temporary car insurance service.

Can I add a learner driver to my car insurance?

It is possible to add a learner driver onto your already existing policy, however this can be costly and put your no claims discount at risk. If you add a learner to your policy it is likely you will be paying for insurance for a long time period when in reality they will only drive the car for a fraction of the time.

Instead of adding a learner to your existing policy, a less costly and more flexible option is to have them take out a temporary learner policy on the car they will be practising in. A temporary policy allows the learner to just be covered when they will actually be practising their driving with you, so you can get cover for a couple of hours or a couple of days at a time. Rather than wasting money on insurance when they might not have time to practise for weeks.

By taking out temporary learner cover, any no claims discount the owner of the practice car in question has will be protected, because it is a separate policy. Another reason to go temporary over adding to your annual policy.

Can more than one learner driver be covered in the same car?

Yes, you can insure two learner drivers on the same car. So if you have a few budding drivers looking to get some extra practice before their test, they can all share one vehicle. This way you can be safe in the knowledge that they’re protected while on the roads.

Does learner driver insurance cover me for my driving test?

Yes it does. If you want to take the practical driving test in your own car then you can use learner driver insurance to do this. However, the car must meet the necessary criteria to be used for a driving test. If you are taking it in your driving instructor’s car then you won’t need to worry about sorting your own insurance for the test.
