Learner Driver Insurance FAQs

+Do learner drivers need car insurance?

Yes, there are a few options- added to an existing policy as a named driver, own annual policy on own car, or short term insurance on either your own car or someone else's.

+What does learner driver insurance cover?

Any temporary car insurance policy you obtain through GoShorty will be fully comprehensive. Our provisional insurance is no different. This means your learner insurance policy protects you from:

+How does learner driver insurance work?

It works in the same way as a traditional car insurance policy. Provisional licence holders will be insured to drive the nominated car and the policy will sit alongside the car owner’s own car insurance policy. With GoShorty you can get a quote in minutes and have the policy in your inbox in seconds so you can start practicing.

+Do I need a supervisor, who can they be and how old must they be?

Yes you do. As a learner driver you can only drive with someone in the same car. This person must have a full uk driving licence, have been driving for at least 3 years and be aged 25 tears or older. They do not have to be related to you.

+Can I learn to drive in someone else’s car?

It is possible to learn to drive in someone else's car. You need to be insured. You also need a provisional license, a driver with a license to supervise you and the appropriate plates for your country. These are L in England & Scotland, with the option of D in Wales.

+Can you get temporary car insurance for 17 year olds?

We offer temporary car insurance for drivers aged 18 to 75. For younger drivers, we offer learner insurance from 17 to 25.

+Does learner driver insurance cover you after you’ve passed your driving test?

No it doesn’t. Once you’ve passed your practical driving test your learner driver insurance will no longer be valid. You have a grace period of 3 hours to drive home from the test centre, but once this period is over you must take out car insurance.

+Can I put a learner driver on my insurance?

While many car insurance policies will allow you to add another driver, or even a learner driver, it may not be the best idea. If you simply add a learner driver to your insurance policy, any accidents or incidents could affect the owner’s no claims discount.
With a provisional insurance policy, this won’t be the case. As short term learner insurance is so flexible it can end up being much cheaper than adding them to your existing policy.

+How much does learner insurance cost?

The total cost of learner insurance will vary depending on:
  1. Your age
  2. The vehicle you want to cover
  3. The length of the policy

Fill in the form above to get an instant quote.

+Does learner driver insurance cover me for my driving test?

Yes it does. If you want to take the practical driving test in your own car then you can use learner driver insurance to do this. If you are taking it in your driving instructor’s car then you won’t need to worry about sorting your own insurance for the test.
