It’s now easier than ever to borrow a campervan or lend out your motorhome thanks to our temporary insurance options. If you’re planning a great British road trip or heading off to a festival, you don’t want to be held back by paperwork. Getting behind the wheel of a motorhome should be about freedom, not faffing with an annual insurance policy.
Take out a comprehensive temporary campervan policy in under two minutes and start your next adventure without any bother.
It’s a standalone motorhome insurance policy that provides comprehensive cover for one day up to 28 days. Because it’s separate from any existing insurance, it won’t affect the owner’s No Claims Discount or annual insurance premiums. It’s a simple, low-risk way to get moving without the long-term commitment.
When it comes to motorhomes, we know that often an annual policy just doesn’t make sense. Maybe you only use a campervan for a few weeks a year, or you’re sharing the driving on a long journey to the coast. That’s where short-term motorhome insurance comes in.
Whether you’re borrowing a friend’s camper for the weekend or you’ve just bought a new motorhome and need to get it home safely, temporary motorhome insurance is the flexible solution you need. At GoShorty, we can get you covered in minutes, so you can focus on the open road ahead.
Getting started is easy. You’ll just need your licence details, the vehicle registration number, and the dates you want the cover to start.
You don’t even have to worry about MID (Motor Insurance Database) updates. We update the database four times a day, every day, so your cover will show up quickly.
All our temporary policies provide comprehensive cover as standard. This is the highest level of protection, covering damage to the vehicle, you, fire, theft, and damage to others.
If you’re planning on crossing the Channel, our policies also include the minimum legal level of insurance required for European travel, as long as your journey starts and ends within the UK.
We like to keep temporary insurance as accessible as possible, but there are a few basic requirements to make sure we can get you a quote:
Read our full eligibility criteria or check out our who we cover page for more details.
We cover a wide range of sleep-in and leisure vehicles, but there’s one important rule: the vehicle must be intended for accommodation. This means it needs to have basic facilities like a bed and cooking equipment.
Please note: We can’t cover a standard commercial van that hasn’t been adapted, like a work van with a mattress thrown in the back for a night. If you’re looking to insure a standard van for a move or a job, our temporary van insurance is the better option.
We know you want to get on with your trip, so we’ve made our quoting process as simple and fast as possible, with no long-winded complicated questions. You can get a quote and be fully covered in two minutes.
Motorhome insurance costs depend on several factors, including the vehicle’s value, your age, and your driving history.
If you only need the vehicle for a week, a temporary policy is often much cheaper than taking out a new yearly policy or paying a high admin fee to adjust an existing one.
Short-term motorhome insurance prices start from £37.50 for one day, and £80.51 for one week. Find out exactly how much it would cost you by getting a quote today.
Whilst our campervan insurance can’t be used for commercial hires or professional loans, it’s perfect for when you’re using a motorhome belonging to someone you know.
You can easily drive someone else’s vehicle as long as you’re insured. In fact, borrowing a vehicle is one of the most common reasons people look for temporary options. If a friend or family member is kind enough to lend you their campervan, you need to make sure you’re legally covered.
Using temporary cover is a win-win for everyone involved. It removes the stress of complicated policy changes and ensures everyone is protected if the unexpected happens.
If you’re the owner of a motorhome, letting someone else drive your wheels can feel a bit nerve-wracking. Short-term motorhome cover takes that weight off your shoulders:
For the person driving, temporary insurance is easy to get and takes the stress out of borrowing someone else’s motorhome:
Phil Evans – Managing Director
“We’re thrilled to expand our temporary insurance range to include motorhomes and campervans. We’ve seen how much drivers value short-term cover for exploring the UK, so adding leisure vehicles was a natural next step. Whether it’s a classic road trip or a weekend at a festival, having comprehensive cover for live-in vehicles makes it easier for everyone to get away in comfort. It’s all about giving more people the chance to get behind the wheel with comprehensive insurance they can trust, without the faff.”

The way people use live-in vehicles in the UK is shifting. Interest from younger couples and families is growing fast, there’s plenty of activity on #vanlife TikTok. Data from Auto Trader shows a 59% increase in advert views for motorhomes and caravans. With temporary cover, you don’t need to own your own campervan to get involved in experiencing life on the road:
Planning a tour of the Highlands or a coastal hop? Weekly campervan cover is perfect for one-off adventures, whether you’re planning a short one-week break or a four-week trip
If you’re driving to a festival and taking a camper instead of a tent, daily campervan insurance is exactly what you need. Take out motorhome insurance for five days and stay protected.
Just bought a new campervan? Get covered instantly so you can drive it home from the dealership or a private seller. A couple of days of motorhome insurance will keep you comprehensively protected whilst you decide on an annual policy.
You can take a motorhome across borders to Europe with our temporary insurance options. However, as with our European car insurance, your journey must start and end in the UK. While in Europe, you will have the minimum level of cover required by the country you are in.
If you only use your motorhome during the warmer months, you might be overpaying for your annual cover. Many owners choose to take their vehicle off the road during the winter to save on tax and insurance.
By declaring your vehicle as SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) with the DVLA, you’re officially stating that it’s kept on private land, like a driveway or a secure storage unit. This allows you to stop paying road tax and cancel your annual insurance policy.
When spring rolls around, and you’re ready for your first trip, you can simply tax the vehicle again and use temporary motorhome insurance for the specific weeks you’ll be travelling. It’s a great way to avoid wasting money on a full year of cover for a vehicle that spends six months in a garage.
Just remember that whilst your vehicle is SORN and uninsured, it won’t be protected against damage, fire or theft. Make sure your storage location is as secure as possible before choosing this route.
The UK is full of incredible places to explore, from the Lake District to the Cornish coast, all made easier in a campervan. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next journey, we’ve put together a UK travel bucket list and a complete road trip guide to help you plan.
Getting the right cover is the easiest part of your trip, thanks to our campervan insurance options. Get your quote today and be on your way in minutes.
Yes, you absolutely can. Our policies are incredibly flexible, allowing you to choose any duration between 1 and 28 days. Whether it’s a weekend break or a full week away, you can get the insurance you need.
Yes, if your van has been converted, you’ll need special campervan insurance rather than regular van cover. For our motorhome policies, the van must be adapted for living, with facilities like a bed and a cooker. A standard van policy won’t cover the living fixtures and fittings inside a conversion.
Yes, you can use temporary cover to get a SORN motorhome back on the road. Temporary cover can be used to tax the vehicle, which you must also have in place before driving. You can only drive a SORN vehicle on a public road without tax if you are heading to a pre-booked MOT appointment. For any other trip, you’ll need both tax and insurance in place.
No, you can’t rely on standard temporary car insurance or van insurance to drive a campervan or motorhome. Because these vehicles are designed for both transport and accommodation, they present different risks than a normal car. Standard policies usually exclude vehicles used for living quarters or modified vehicles, and they won’t cover the fixtures and fittings inside. To be legally protected and ensure your campervan is actually covered, you need a specialist motorhome policy.
We’re seeing more people using peer-to-peer loans, where individuals rent out their personal motorhomes to others for a fee. Our policies are designed to handle these personal arrangements, making it easy to lend your vehicle to family or friends with total peace of mind. However, please note that our cover cannot be used for commercial hire businesses or professional rental fleets.
