What is Weekly Car Insurance?

Sometimes, an annual policy, or being added to one, is too much, and a daily insurance policy just isn’t enough. That’s where weekly car insurance comes in. It’s the perfect middle ground for those in-between moments in life. Whether you need 7-day car insurance, two-week car insurance, or more, we have the temporary car insurance solutions for you. Our short-term weekly options provide you with standalone, comprehensive protection that doesn’t mess with anyone else’s existing cover.

We’ve designed our weekly cover to be as simple as possible. There’s no need to call up your annual provider and pay a hefty admin fee and premium adjustments just to add a driver for a few days. Instead, you can take out a separate policy that starts exactly when you need it and ends when you’re done. Seven days of cover can be the perfect fit if you’re between policies or borrowing someone else’s car – it keeps you protected and gives any other policyholders on the vehicle peace of mind.

  • Comprehensive cover
  • 1 hour to 28 days flexible cover
  • For drivers aged 19 to 75
  • Maximum car value £65,000
  • Doesn’t affect the car owner’s No Claims Discount

When Weekly Cover Comes in Handy

Life moves fast, and your insurance should keep up. Here are some of the most common situations where our customers find that insurance by the week is the best fit for them:

  • The Big Staycation: If you’re heading off on a 7-day road trip across the UK, you might want to borrow a bigger, more comfortable car from a friend or family member. Our weekly cover lets you take the wheel with total peace of mind, allowing you to share the driving duties without worrying about the owner’s insurance.
  • The Repair Gap: It’s never a good time for your car to be in the garage. If you’re using a courtesy car or borrowing a car from a mate while yours is being fixed, a week of insurance ensures you can easily stay mobile without the faff.
  • Moving House Or To Uni: Moving is stressful enough without insurance headaches and struggling to fit everything in. If you’re borrowing a larger vehicle, or even a van (we offer temporary van insurance for that), for a week of moving boxes and furniture, we can get you covered quickly so you can focus on the heavy lifting.
  • Visiting From Abroad: If you’re an expat returning to the UK for a trip and still hold a valid UK licence, taking out our insurance for non-UK residents for a couple of weeks can massively improve your time here. If you’re here for a week and need to use a car, taking out your own policy is often the cheapest and easiest way to get on the road legally. You won’t have to rely on others for lifts or fork out for car rental.
  • Buying a New Car: We know buying a new car can be stressful. Once you finally get the keys, you’ll need some breathing room to decide on the right annual policy. One week’s insurance is the perfect option to give you the time to shop around for a good deal. It works perfectly as drive-away cover, so you can drive your new car home and keep it insured for a few days without having to rush a big decision.

Sharing The Drive: The Safety Benefits Of Weekly Cover

When you’re planning a trip for a week or two, you might be tempted to do all the driving yourself if you’re going with people who aren’t insured on your car. However, sharing the drive is one of the best ways to stay safe and make the overall trip more enjoyable. According to Brake’s road safety data, driver fatigue is a factor in up to 20% of all road accidents.

By having others take out weekly car insurance on the vehicle being used, you can all easily take turns driving without anyone getting fatigued. You aren’t just making the trip more fun, you’re making it safer. Having a second insured driver means you can swap over whenever you feel tired, ensuring everyone arrives at the destination refreshed and ready for the holiday.

Why Choose GoShorty For Weekly Cover?

We aren’t just any other insurance provider or broker. We’re experts in temporary insurance; we work with a specialist insurance panel to provide you with the best options for insurance by the week, and we endlessly work to ensure getting cover is as quick and easy as possible for you:

  • NCD Not Affected: If you’re borrowing a car and have an accident, the owner’s No Claims Discount is completely protected. A temporary policy is a standalone policy that won’t affect any NCD attached to the vehicle.
  • Comprehensive By Default: Every weekly policy we issue is comprehensive.
  • Instant Documentation: As soon as you’ve paid, your documents are sent straight to your inbox, and you can get on the road instantly – no waiting.
  • Get Cover in Under Two Mins: We’ve made getting a quote as straightforward as possible. You can get a quote, pay, and be insured in minutes. If you download our temporary insurance app, you can get weekly insurance even faster.
  • Regular MID updates: Unlike other temporary insurers, we update the MID four times a day, 365 days a year. Meaning your week of car insurance will appear there. Find out more about MID updates and what they mean in our guide.

Why Frequent MID Updates Matter for Weekly Insurance

If you’re insuring a car for a week, for whatever reason, you’re likely to encounter many ANPR cameras. If this happens and your insurance isn’t on the MID, you could be at risk of being pulled over. However, thanks to our frequent MID updates, weekly policies will appear on the MID in no time, saving you from any headaches. In the UK, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau’s (MIB) Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) laws mean that a vehicle must have insurance at all times unless it has been declared SORN. When you take out a weekly policy with GoShorty, we update the MID as quickly as possible, so you’re never left short.

Please remember, though, you do not need to wait for insurance to appear on the MID to drive – once you’re insured and have your insurance certificate, you can set off on your journey.

Flexible Weekly Car Insurance For Every Driver

We don’t think insurance should be one-size-fits-all. Different drivers have different needs, which is why our weekly car insurance is designed for flexibility. If you’re a driver aged 19 to 75, we can help you get insurance for one week, two weeks, or more…

Student Drivers: If you’re a student returning home for a week’s reading break, you don’t need to be on your parents’ policy all year. Just get cover for the week you’re actually home with our student car insurance

Young Drivers: We know that young driver insurance can be pricey. A weekly policy is a great way to build up road experience in a borrowed car without the massive price tag of an annual premium.

How Much is Weekly Car Insurance?

Because we know you’re looking for cheap weekly car insurance, we work with a panel of leading insurers to find you the best prices. The exact price of weekly car insurance varies from person to person, as insurers use criteria to set premiums. Prices will vary based on age, experience, location and the vehicle itself.

Based on our car insurance calculator, the average cost for a one-week policy for a car is £29.46. Please note that your price may differ depending on your details.

Is Weekly Insurance Cheaper Than Changing Your Annual Policy?

When people look for cheap weekly car insurance, they often think about just adding a driver to their existing annual policy. However, this can be surprisingly expensive. Many insurers charge an admin fee (often upwards of £15) every time you make a change to your policy, such as adding a temporary driver.

By the time you’ve paid that fee plus any premium adjustments for the new driver, a standalone GoShorty weekly policy is often the much cheaper and faster option. Plus, there’s no risk to the main policyholder’s NCD if the temporary driver has a bump. It’s a win-win.

Understanding Weekly Cover: What’s Included?

What You’re Covered For

  • Accidental Damage: Protection if the car is damaged while you’re driving.
  • Fire and Theft: You’re covered if the vehicle is stolen or damaged by fire.
  • Third-Party Liability: Cover for injury to other people or damage to their property.
  • Business Type 1: Extending beyond just commuting cover, you’ll also be covered for travelling elsewhere for work with our temporary business car insurance.

What isn’t Covered

  • Learning to Drive: You’ll need a specific temporary learner driver insurance policy for that.
  • Pre-existing Issues: We can’t cover mechanical breakdowns or damage that happened before the policy started. We do offer additional breakdown cover if something does go wrong, though.
  • Hire and Reward: None of our car policies can be used for hire and reward purposes; we only offer van hire & reward insurance.
  • Taxi Use: Weekly policies are not eligible if you’ll use the vehicle as a taxi.
  • Impound Release: To get a car out of a compound, you’ll need specialist impound release insurance. Our weekly policies can’t be used for this.
  • Motor Racing, pacemaking & track days
  • Motor trade usage
  • Carrying hazardous goods
  • Using in hazardous locations
  • Hired vehicles
