What Is Temporary Learner Insurance?

Temporary learner insurance is a short-term, comprehensive policy that allows someone with a provisional licence to drive a specific car while being supervised.

Unlike traditional annual insurance, where you might be added as a named driver to a parent’s policy, this is a separate policy. It sits alongside the owner’s existing insurance, meaning you have your own cover for the duration of your practice sessions. It’s a practical, no-faff way to get behind the wheel. If you’re wondering do learner drivers need insurance for every trip, the answer is a firm yes – even for a quick drive around the block.

How Long Can You Get Learner Cover For?

How To Get a Learner Insurance Quote

Getting your insurance sorted doesn’t have to be a headache. We’ve kept the process as simple as possible so you can get a quote and be covered in under two minutes (it’s even quicker on our app). You’ll just need a few details handy:

  • The registration number of the car you’ll be practising in.
  • Your name, address, date of birth, and occupation (this can include student).
  • Your provisional licence details.

This is all the information we need to be able to get you a quote. You can choose exactly when you want the cover to start and how long you want it to last. If you’ve chosen an immediate start, once you’ve paid, you can be on your way. We’ll send all your documents straight to your inbox.

Why You Need Learner Insurance

With driving tests currently hard to book, it’s never been more important to be test-ready. According to the Ready to Pass Campaign, the average learner requires around 45 hours of professional lessons and 22 hours of private practice to pass.

Temporary learner cover is perfect for helping you get test-ready, whilst only paying for the time you’ll actually be on the road:

  • Private Practice: Clocking up those extra 22 hours of practice is vital for experiencing different road conditions and times of day. Unlike being a named driver, you aren’t tied to one car. You can take out cover in minutes to practice with different friends or family members whenever the opportunity arises.
  • Your Driving Test: Many learners feel more confident taking the practical test in a car they are already familiar with. You can use learner insurance as a form of driving test insurance to cover you for the exam itself, and some prep work beforehand.

Our flexible options let you take out cover whenever you have the chance to get behind the wheel, helping you become a safer, more intuitive driver.

The Benefits of Temporary Learner Cover for Car Owners

Short-term learner cover offers a significant benefit for car owners that being added as a named driver simply doesn’t. Because temporary provisional insurance is a standalone policy, it sits entirely separately from any other insurance on the vehicle.

This means that when the learner gets insured, the owner’s premium isn’t affected. If there are any accidents or bumps during practice sessions, the claim is made through the learner’s policy. This protects any accrued No Claims Discount (NCD) on the owner’s policy, taking the pressure off the whole process of lending your car to a learner.

Who Can Get Temporary Learner Driver Insurance?

To take out short-term learner insurance, you and the vehicle you’re practising in must meet certain eligibility criteria. For more details, head to our who we cover page.

  • You must hold a valid UK provisional driving licence.
  • You must be between the ages of 17 and 75.
  • You must not have had any claims or penalty points. Check our guide on points on a provisional licence if you aren’t sure.
  • The car must be covered by an underlying annual policy
  • The car must have a market value under £50,000.
  • You must be supervised at all times whilst behind the wheel.

Rules For Your Supervisor

Having a supervisor is a legal requirement for provisional practice; it’s important to check exactly who can sit with a learner driver to ensure your cover remains valid. Generally, they must:

  • Be over the age of 21 (some policies require them to be over 25; check your policy document wording).
  • Have held a full UK/EU/EEA driving licence for at least 3 years.
  • Be qualified to drive the type of vehicle you are practising in.

What’s Covered By Learner Insurance

Our policies always provide comprehensive cover, the highest level of protection available, so you can build your driving confidence with one less worry.

  • Accidental Damage: Protection if you damage the car, or if someone else does.
  • Third-Party Liability: Cover for damage to other people’s property or injuries to others.
  • Fire and Theft: Protection if the car is stolen or damaged by fire.

What Isn’t Covered:

  • Driving Alone: A learner caught driving alone faces heavy fines and points. You must always be supervised.
  • Motorway Driving: Learners can only drive on motorways with a qualified ADI in a car with dual controls.
  • Post-Pass Driving: As soon as you pass, this policy is only valid for a three-hour grace period to get you home. After that, you’ll need regular insurance.
  • Commercial Use: You can’t use the car for work or delivery purposes.

Optional Extras You Can Add-On:

While comprehensive cover offers excellent protection for the insured vehicle, there are additional options you might want to include for extra peace of mind whilst out practising your driving:

  • Breakdown Protection Cover – For as little as £1.49, add breakdown protection to your learner policy. This includes roadside assistance, local recovery, nationwide recovery, and up to £250 towards alternative transport to complete your journey if needed.
  • Legal Protection Cover – If you’re involved in a non-fault accident and need to take legal action to attempt to recover your uninsured losses, this extra can help cover the associated costs in some cases.

Frequently Asked Learner Questions

How does learner driver insurance work?

It works as a standalone policy that covers you to practice in a specific car while you’re being supervised. Because the policy is in the learner’s name, the car owner’s premium and No Claims Discount won’t be affected if you have a bump. You simply choose the duration you need, so you’re only paying for the time you’re actually using the car. You can easily take out another policy whenever you need to.

Can I learn to drive in someone else’s car?

Yes, as long as you have the right insurance. A temporary policy lets you borrow a car safely. You just need your provisional licence, a suitable supervisor, and L plates (or D plates in Wales).

Can more than one learner driver be covered on the same car?

They’ll each need their own policy if using short-term learner cover. If you have siblings or friends all looking to get extra practice, they can each take out their own separate temporary policy for the same vehicle, no problem at all.

Can you get learner insurance for 17-year-olds?

We offer temporary learner insurance for drivers aged 17 to 75. As long as you have a provisional licence and a suitable vehicle to practice in, we can get you sorted in minutes.

Does learner driver insurance cover you after you’ve passed?

No. Once you pass your practical test, your learner policy is no longer valid. We provide a three-hour grace period to drive home, but after that, you must take out a policy for full licence holders.

Can I add a learner driver to my car insurance?

You can, but it’s often expensive and puts your No Claims Discount at risk. A standalone temporary policy is usually the best way to insure a learner because it protects the owner’s NCD and avoids mid-term adjustment fees.

What’s the cheapest car to insure for a learner?

Cars in insurance groups 1 to 5 are typically cheapest. Whether you should learn in an automatic or manual car also matters, as automatic insurance can sometimes be slightly more expensive. Some of the cheapest cars to insure as a learner are a Volkswagen Golf (1 day prices start from £24.22), Ford Fiesta (1 day of cover starts from £25.46), or a Vauxhall Corsa (1 day starting from £26.84).

Can I insure myself as a learner?

Yes. With us, you take out the policy in your own name. This makes you the policyholder for the duration of the cover, even if you’re borrowing the car.

Does learner insurance cover the supervisor?

No, the policy covers just the learner. If the supervisor isn’t covered by the car’s annual insurance, then it could be a good idea for them to take out temporary car insurance, in case they need to take over driving at any point.

Can I use my temporary insurance for my test?

Yes. Many learners prefer taking their test in a car they know well. Our driving test insurance covers you for the exam.
